Safety Notice - Remote De-energisation Re-energisation

Background

Aurora Energy have changed their process for vacated residential and small business customer premises where no new ownership of the electricity account has been appointed.

Since April 2025 where a customer premise has been vacated, Aurora Energy has been issuing disconnection service orders and TasNetworks field crews have been disconnecting properties via fuse removal where no new ownership of the electricity account has been appointed.

From 13 April until 22 May 2026, Aurora Energy are trialling the use of advanced meters for remotely disconnecting and reconnecting energy.  The benefits of this include faster turnaround times for disconnection and reconnection services and a significantly reduced cost for this service.

Impact

Electricians should not assume a site is energised or de-energised based on occupancy or appearance. The implementation of this process introduces several important considerations:

  • Disconnected sites may be encountered without any physical signage or onsite notification.
  • Reconnection occurs when a new customer establishes an account with Aurora Energy.
  • The customer or builder may confirm the status of the supply, but this does not remove the requirement to isolate the installation.

Isolate the supply and circuits you will be working on

If you undertake any electrical work (e.g. metering, wiring, repairs, demolitions, renovations, etc):

Isolation should be done in accordance to AS/NZS 4836 - Safe working on or near low voltage and extra-low voltage electrical installations and equipment.

Unterminated and unused cables shall be terminated in accordance to AS/NZS 3000.
