The Tasmanian Government has committed to reviewing the Residential Tenancy Act 1997 (the Act) as part of its Tasmanian Housing Strategy – Action Plan 2023–2027. The Residential Tenancy Act 1997 governs residential tenancy arrangements within Tasmania. It sets out the rights and responsibilities of tenants, property owners, agents, and housing providers.
The Government has released a Discussion Paper for consultation. This Discussion Paper gives consideration to residential tenancy legislation in Tasmania. We encourage feedback and views on the scope and effectiveness of the Act, including matters which could be added, removed or changed in our existing laws.
While this paper includes specific reference to a range of concerns and ideas brought forward by stakeholders, it is not intended that the review is only concerned with issues specifically referenced in this Discussion Paper. Tasmanians are welcome to respond to specific issues and questions covered in this paper, or to provide feedback on any other matter related to the regulation of residential tenancy.
We invite feedback from tenants, property owners, housing providers, community and industry representatives, and all other interested parties.
